AMIR KHAN: RICKY RIGHT TO RETIRE

DAILY STAR SUNDAY
ABOVE: Ricky Hatton is set to retire
14th March 2010

By Nick Parkinson

AMIR KHAN has told Ricky Hatton to start enjoying his retirement – and forget about boxing.

Hatton, 31, is set to announce his retirement this week.

There had been speculation he would fight Bolton’s WBA world light-welterweight champion Khan.

But Hatton’s younger brother Matthew says The Hitman had lacked his usual spark in training since being KO’d in two rounds by Filipino Manny Pacquiao in May.

Khan defends his world title against Yank Paulie Malignaggi at Madison Square Garden on May 15.

And he said: “It’s a great move by Ricky to retire.

“He has had a great career and has only been beaten by the best two fighters in the world. He should call it a day and enjoy himself. If his own brother is saying he lacks spark in training, he should take his brother’s advice and retire.

“I don’t have to fight Ricky Hatton.

“I have got big fights with other big opponents.

“If he has retired, I think it’s the best move he has made. He will always be known as a great fighter and he has made enough money.Ricky should relax and chill out.

“Me against him would be a great fight and one of the biggest fights in British boxing.”

But Khan is not ruling out a future clash with London lightweight Kevin Mitchell.

He said: “It would be good to fight someone from Frank Warren’s company. He would want to get me back for leaving him.”
