AMIR KHAN ACCUSED OF BEING 'A FRAUD' BY GARY SHAW

ABOVE: Amir Khan retains his WBA title by beating Dmitriy Salina
4th February 2010

By Nick Parkinson

AMIR Khan has been accused of being “a fraud” by American promoter Gary Shaw for not fighting Timothy Bradley next.

The Bolton boxer is being lined up to face Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas on May 15 in his US debut after signing for American promoter Golden Boy last month.

The 23-year-old WBA light-welterweight champ had been due for a mandatory defence against Argentine Marcos Maidana, but Golden Boy want to delay that fight.

Maidana has been offered the chance to fight American Victor Ortiz on the undercard and if he accepts, the Briton will not have to give up his WBA world title.

But Shaw claims Khan is running scared of Maidana and WBO champ Bradley.

He said: “I tried to make a fight between Amir Khan and Timothy Bradley and Golden Boy said, ‘Absolutely no chance’.

“I believe that’s the reason he refuses to fight Maidana, he’s scared. Scared of Maidana. Scared of Bradley.

“I believe Amir Khan is a fraud. I’ll believe it until he accepts the challenge to fight Tim Bradley.”

But Golden Boy boss Richard Schaefer says victory over Marquez will make Khan an instant star in the States. He said: “If Khan wins, it would be a huge introduction to the American audience.”
