JUDGE SHAMES DEFOE

ABOVE: 'Shamefaced' Defoe
7th November 2009

By Cath Peerless

ENGLAND football star Jermain Defoe was accused of “shamefaced behaviour” by a judge yesterday for failing to turn up at court to see his appeal against a driving ban kicked out.

The 26-year-old Spurs striker was hit with a six- month driving ban in July and ordered to pay £2,100 in fines and legal costs.

He had been found guilty of two counts of speeding in his £70,000 Range Rover and two offences of failing to tell police who was behind the wheel.

But the ban was put on hold until the appeal hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court in Essex.

Judge Anthony Goldstaub QC dismissed the appeal and described Defoe’s failure to attend as “shameful behaviour”.

He will give reasons for his judgment next week.
