In my essay I will explore whether ecologically friendly architecture can be designed in a classical style or whether eco design suits only a modern style building, I will try to determine whether there is a market for environmentally friendly buildings in traditional styles such as Baroque and Rococo .I am interested in researching this because my two main interests concerning architecture are creating sustainable structures that are also beautiful, reflecting the intricacy of Gothic tracery, Renaissance entablature and motifs, Rococo ornamentation, palatial Neoclassical porticos and Romanesque arcading to name just a few.I will look into different green building projects to establish whether any architects have previously applied this idea of merging the two concepts on a new design (as opposed to refurbishing an older building to make it more environmentally friendly) and whether it actually practically possible; for instance solar panels don look traditional in style, their structure is very modern looking so they would be difficult to incorporate sympathetically into a Gothic town house for example.I will research into different methods of sustainable building and different technologies that can contribute to a sustainable structure and how they could be applied to a building designed with traditional architectural beauty in mind.I will look at Eric Corey Freed organic architecture, Thom Mayne and his individual ideas about how sustainable architecture should be measured and perceived, Glenn Murcutt and the way he developed ideas for sustainable building by looking at his country traditional buildings, Ken Yeang and his concept of and I will also research contemporary classical architects such as Hans Kollhoff, Duncan Stroik and Thomas Gordon Smith.I will investigate whether the general public perception of beauty in architecture has changed and whether modern architecture is just what the people believe to be attractive now or whether there is a faction of people who agree with me that the traditional styles should be preserved and re interpreted rather than replaced with glass skyscrapers. Two examples of precedent for my essay research.Prince Charles Poundbury Project, designed by John Simpson and Leon Krier, the following quote explains one of the main themes behind thisurban planning project with a strong focus on social values: New Urbanist principles, Poundbury was intended to reduce car dependency and encourage walking, cycling, and public transport. (Source Wikipedia). The project uses sustainableattitude and traditional style designs. The Sapling Project in Croatia, again another community/socially focussed project the Sapling Project designed by Keith Pierce aims to create sustainable structures whilst also using traditional Croatian building methods and rendering styles..
