A native of Evansville, Susie was the daughter of the late William Frederick and Margaret “Peg” Lauenstein Atkinson. She graduated from Bosse High School in 1953 and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1958.
