The picture of your son eating a slice of watermelon is so cute. Most of the guides that I have read indicate 1″ of water per week the drier the soil, the sweeter the melon (though you don’t want to absolutely dehydrate the vines they need water, but not all that much). When the seedlings popped up, we watered on a regular basis (never let the soil become dry and cracked, of course), but once the plants had set fruit, I basically ignored them.
Bounded by Mulberry, Bayard, Baxter and Worth Sts., the open space named after Christopher Columbus was part of the eradication of the infamous Five Points slum. The 19th century neighbourhood housed impoverished European labourers along with the criminal elements that Charles Dickens found worth a visit and Martin Scorsese brought to life in Gangs of New York. The huge Foley Square Courthouse complex sits on top of part of the old Five Points. But the human scale of Columbus Park is much more inviting. Mah jong, tai chi and basketball attract multi generations from Chinatown’s overcrowded tenements.
Brian Carter Cellars 2012 Abracadabra, Columbia Valley, $22: Brian Carter’s entry level red wine truly is a magical and eclectic blend of 12 varieties, leading with Cabernet Sauvignon (28 percent), Merlot (19 percent) and Syrah (12 percent). It takes on a theme of dark purple fruit, starting with aromas of blueberry taffy and black currant that are joined by lilac, lavender and roasted coffee. There’s a ton of fruit sitting in the mouth, featuring sweet blueberry and elderberry, followed by Bing cherry skin tannins and pepper.
